Partnership between NETS and ComfortDelGro aims to increase QR code payments adoption amongst hawkers

In February this year, NETS announced a partnership with ComfortDelGro Taxi to increase the adoption of the NETS QR code payment solution across hawker centres in Singapore. The NETS QR code was launched last year as a standardised QR code, allowing customers to pay for their goods and services using their respective bank mobile apps, such as DBS PayLah! and OCBC’s Pay Anyone, and/or NETSPay instead of their cards.

Through the ‘Hawker Champion’ programme, ComfortDelGro taxi drivers are responsible for sharing about the NETS QR code payment solution to hawkers, and incentives will be given for every successful hawker that signs up with NETS through the taxi drivers. To further drive the goal, ComfortDelGro taxi drivers and staff will be given a NETS FlashPay card with usage value of $5 when they download the NETSPay app.

The programme was first carried out by 100 taxi drivers who signed up in February this year, after going through customised training from NETS. It was then slowly rolled out to the rest of the fleet over the following months.

ComfortDelGro taxi drivers are well-positioned to be the advocates of the NETS QR code payment solution. As ComfortDelGro taxi drivers were amongst the first to use it in their profession, they are familiar with how to use various digital payments and appreciate the convenience offered by them.

There are more than 1,000 stalls across 70 hawker centres which accept card and QR code payments, but even more hawkers still rely on cash for their daily transactions. Aside from having to change consumer habits, hawkers face difficulties when having to accept various kinds of digital payments, such as machines going out-of-order and the different fees involved for different cashless payment systems. To encourage hawkers to install NETS terminals, NETS is waiving all terminal and transaction fees for 3 years.

The ‘Hawker Champion’ programme is aligned with Singapore’s goal in becoming a Smart Nation, complementing efforts made by the government to accelerate adoption of digital payments in Singapore.
