First WeChat Campaign launched in ION Orchard

Retailers seek to increase sales to Chinese shoppers through WeChat Shake (摇一摇) Campaign

More businesses in Singapore are targeting mainland Chinese customers to boost retail sales.

WeChat, the most popular instant messaging app in China, is one platform that businesses can leverage on to promote their goods and services.

Retailers in ION Orchard have partnered with FOMO Advertising, a subsidiary of local payments company FOMO Pay, to launch the WeChat Shake Campaign.

From now to 16th October, WeChat users will be able to redeem free gifts and obtain attractive discounts from selected retailers in ION Orchard such as Lee Hwa Diamond, shu uemura and Calvin Klein Platinum. This campaign period coincides with the Chinese National Day, also known as Golden Week, a 7-day holiday celebrated in China on the first week of October.

WeChat users are notified of the campaign through the poster placed outside the store. Coupons are obtained by scanning the QR code shown on the poster or using the WeChat Shake function.

WeChat Shake is a popular feature in WeChat that helps offline retailers attract nearby consumers to their stores. In order to do so, it makes use of the iBeacon technology, a small Bluetooth device that enables mobile apps to detect the WeChat user’s location. The device covers a 20m radius.

By shaking their phones, the user’s location is accessed through the user’s smartphone, allowing businesses to detect and interact with mobile users nearby. Businesses can then transmit information about their stores' locations and promotions directly to the user. This feature helps businesses to increase store traffic and conversion rates with minimal spending on publicity efforts.

At the same time, the WeChat Shake function is an interesting and interactive indoor navigation feature for consumers. By directing them to specific stores with attractive promotions, it helps to maximize their shopping experience.
